PIPELINES_IGS_IN depicts the location and extent of known natural gas, crude oil, and refined products pipelines in Indiana. PIPELINES, the predecessor of PIPELINES_IGS_IN, was digitized from data shown on 1:63,360 scale (1 inch = 1 mile) county work maps compiled for the creation of Indiana Geological Survey, Miscellaneous Map 53, Map of Indiana Showing Oil, Gas, and Products Pipelines, by S.J. Keller, 1991, Scale 1:500,000.
Purpose:
PIPELINES_IGS_IN was created to provide the Indiana Geological Survey and public with a functional digital representation of oil and gas pipeline locations in Indiana for use in geographic information system.

In some instances, pipelines that are within 0.25 mile of each other AND have the same operator have been depicted as one line. In such cases, the "Pipe_Size" attribute values will include all pipe sizes depicted by a given line.

This shapefile was digitized from 1:63,360-scale source maps. However, the maps were based on "General Highway and Transportation County Base Maps" compiled in the 1930s to 1950s, that are known to contain sizeable amounts of error. This creates problems when trying to compile a statewide digital dataset for use with other, more accurate base maps in a geographic information system. In cases where multiple county maps would not align properly, pipelines were edge-matched to produce a seamless shapefile devoid of county line offsets. Given the inaccuracy of the source base maps IT SHOULD BE ASSUMED THAT THESE DATA HAVE A HORIZONTAL POSITIONAL ERROR OF + OR - 1/2 MILE. If you need more detailed pipeline location information for a given county, please contact the Indiana Geological Survey for a digital copy of the original county work maps.

These county-based work maps depict the locations of known natural gas, crude oil, and refined products pipelines in each of Indiana's 92 counties. The maps are 1:63,360- scale and utilize the old "General Highway and Transportation" base, that is known to contain a significant degree of horizontal spatial error. The work maps were compiled by IGS researchers and updated in 1988 by S.J. Keller for the production of Indiana Geological Survey Miscellaneous Map 53, Map of Indiana Showing Oil, Gas, and Products Pipelines, 1991, scale 1:500,000. Data on these work maps were compiled from miscellaneous oil and gas company pipeline maps.

Process_Description:
County Pipeline Work Maps from MM53 were scanned using a full-spectrum wide-bed scanner and the images were saved as .tif files (and later compressed as lower resolution JPEG images). Each image was then georeferenced in ESRI ArcInfo 8.0 using the Register and Rectify commands. For the registration, tics were located at the corners of townships allowing for the most complete and accurate tic placement for each county. Once the images were georeferenced, pipelines were digitized on screen and attributed in ESRI ArcView 3.2.
