Abstract:
This point shapefile was created to display in a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) environment the data points that represent water wells and boreholes contained in the iLITH database. The following description of the iLITH database contains the information contained in the shapefile, taken from Open-File Study 00-08 -- "iLITH is a Microsoft Access database containing GIS capabilities that allows users to interact with a portion of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Water-Well Record Database. iLITH differs from the IDNR database in that lithologic descriptions and drilling contractor names have been standardized, locational information for ~104,000 water-well logs has been verified, and the spatial information in the database has been standardized for use with USGS digital elevation data and U.S. Census Bureau Tiger data. The iLITH graphical interface facilitates efficient interaction between the user and the database."
Purpose:
The iLITH shapefile was developed as a tool for display of the iLITH version of the IDNR water-well record database in a GIS environment. The shapefile provides a display of the entire database and can be used with ESRI ArcView 3.2 extensions that are written in Avenue and were authored by IGS personnel. Use of the extensions allows immediate display of the water well records in map form and can be used to create and display lithologic cross sections or 3-D Scenes using ESRI ArcView 3D Analyst.

The data in the iLITH database were recorded by water well drilling contractors and Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) staff. Locations of wells provided by the contractors were field checked by personnel of the IDNR. The Indiana Geological Survey verified the Indiana Department of Natural Resources locations by comparing UTM coordinates and Public Land Survey System (PLSS) descriptions. The verification process only verified that data were entered consistently, not the accuracy of the location of the wells.

Approximately 200,000 additional water well logs exist, but these were not used in the construction of the iLITH database because of incomplete or inaccurate locational and lithologic information. The shapefile contains all records contained in the version 1.03 4-12-01 of the iLITH database

The following discussion is from Open-File Study 00-8 of the Indiana Geological Survey -- "...the location information for each record was verified by comparing the different types of location information that are collected by the IDNR. Public Land Survey System (PLSS) descriptions were compared to Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinates. If a discrepancy greater than 1000 feet was identified, the record was removed from the new dataset... This method is an error checking procedure and doesn't assume that either location is accurate." iLITH_loc32001.shp was opened in ESRI ArcView, together with INCLP83.shp, which shows the boundary of Indiana compiled at a scale of 1:24,000. Visual inspection of iLITH_loc32001.shp showed that all 106,096 records were located within the boundary of INCLP83.shp. A copy of iLITH_loc32001.shp was created and renamed as WATERWELLS_ILITH_IN.shp to reflect that this visual inspection had been performed in lieu of clipping.
