Abstract:
LAKE_MICHIGAN_COASTAL_AERIAL_PHOTOS is a collection of aerial photos designed for used with geographic information systems software. The data set was created at the Indiana Geological Survey by scanning and georeferencing aerial photo prints provided by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. The data set includes more than 1,000 color aerial photos acquired by IDNR for the Lake Michigan shoreline over a period of more than 20 years, including 1987, 1990, 1993, 1995, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2006 and 2008.
Purpose:
LAKE_MICHIGAN_COASTAL_AERIAL_PHOTOS may be used to observe temporal changes along the Lake Michigan coast in Indiana. Image mosaics may be viewed online on the LakeRim Web site. Individual image tiles are available for download at www.indiana.edu/arcims/lakerim.

The Georeferencing tool of ESRI ArcGIS was used to georeference these images, using the 2005 color orthophotography of Indiana as a basemap. In georeferencing the photos, a goal was set for a minimum of 10 control points per image, and a target root mean square (RMS) error value of ten meters or less. Higher errors were encountered for photographs with few identifiable control features (for example, open water, forest).

Process_Description:
Aerial photo prints from 1998, 2002, 2003, 2006 and 2008 were scanned on an Epson GT15000 flatbed scanner at 300 dpi. Aerial photo images from 1987, 1990, 1993, 1995 and 1999 (which were scanned years earlier as part of the Lake Rim GIS project) were downloaded from the LakeRim IMS site. IGS personnel used the "Georeferencing" tool of ESRI ArcGIS to georeference the images. The 2005 color orthophotography for Indiana was used as a basemap for identifying control points. Stationary identifiable features such as roads and buildings were used as control points. Most photos were georeferenced using a minimum of ten control points per image, with a target root mean square (RMS) error value of ten meters or less.
