"This data was compiled by IDEM for inclusion in their GIS data repository to support a feasibility study of remediation and restoration of the Grand Calumet River and Indiana Harbor Canal. All_bdry is an ESRI feature class representing the municipal boundaries of the adjacent cities of East Chicago, Gary, and Hammond Indiana. It is a compilation of city boundary line ESRI .shp files from the cities' GIS databases. The municipal boundary shapefile from each city was imported to a single ESRI feature class, the common attributes from the city shapefiles are included in the All_bdry feature class."
"All_bdry was compiled as a base map layer for the planning and execution of the remediation of contaminated sediments found in the Grand Calumet River and Indiana Harbor Ship Canal. The cities of East Chicago, Gary, and Hammond were asked to provide their GIS data to IDEM for use by IDEM and ACOE in the GIS database to support the remediation and restoration of the waterways of north Lake County Indiana."
"The files imported for this Feature Dataset consist of lines and polygons compiled from March 1995 (Hammond) and April 1997 (East Chicago and Gary) aerial photography and other supplemental sources. Consistent with the aerial orthophotography sets, the compiled files have been orthorectified to survey control points, edgematched, and projected to the Indiana State Plane Coordinate System, datum NAD83. The files are horizontally accurate within plus/minus 2.5 feet and may be used with confidence at a scale of 1:1200 or smaller. The City files were projected to UTM Zone 16 North NAD83 prior to importation to the Feature Dataset.
"In March of 1995, the Hammond Sanitary District along with the City of Hammond and the Towns of Highland and Munster formed a consortium known as HHAMMP (the Hammond, Highland and Munster Mapping Project) for the purpose of creating individual basemaps of those northwestern Indiana communities. They contracted with Merrick and Company of Aurora, Colorado to collect new aerial photography of the entire study area (plus a 100 foot surrounding buffer zone) and to generate individual basemaps. The HHAMMP project has served as a model for East Chicago, which created its own basemap in 1997 modeled upon the HHAMMP specifications. All layers of the basemaps are consistent with 1995 (Hammond) and 1997 (East Chicago) digital orthophotography (at a negative scale of 1:7920, equating to 1 inch = 660 feet) and other supplemental sources. These aerial orthophotography sets were orthorectified to survey control points and projected to the Indiana State Plane Coordinate System, datum NAD83. The files are horizontally accurate within the National Map Accuracy Standards. Some layers incorporate topographic contours at two foot contour intervals. Vertical accuracy for the contours is plus/minus half a contour level, while for spot elevations the accuracy is plus/minus one quarter of a contour level. Therefore, for the two foot contour interval, overall vertical accuracy is at one foot and for spot elevations it is at six inches. Files are stored in double precision.
"Data from Gary was digitized from digital ortho images that were produced from aerial photography captured in April, 1997 by GRW Aerial Surveys, Inc. for the City of Gary, Indiana. The aerial photography was processed in 20000308 by Airmaps, Inc., of Elkhart, Indiana in the following manner to create the orthohotography: 1:3,960 scale aerial photography diapositives were scanned with a precision photogrammetric scanner at 24 micron, 1058 d.p.i., resolution to produce an approximate .31 foot pixel ground resolution. Scanned imagery was then oriented using ground control and aerial triangulation solution created for mapping and DTM collection. Imagery was then differientially rectified using orientation parameters & TIN surface created from DTM. Upon rectification, the images were resampled to a final .5 foot pixel ground resolution, mosaiced together, trimmed to sheet tiles, & exported to tiff format.
"The feature datasets were converted to ArcGIS shapefiles from AutoCAD Version 14 format. The original AutoCAD vector datasets were digitized by Airmaps, Inc., of Elkhart, Indiana, using the prepared orthophotography. Horizontal Accuracy for the AutoCAD version was sited as 1.25' and vertical accuracy as 0.5'."
