SURFICIAL_GEOL_MM49_IN is a polygon shapefile that shows surficial geology in Indiana at a scale of 1:500,000. The mapped units include textural assemblages of quaternary sediments and bedrock lithologies.
Purpose:
SURFICIAL_GEOL_MM49_IN was derived from a coverage named "SURF_GEO500." SURF_GEO500 was created to provide a digital coverage of the surficial geology of the state of Indiana, suitable for use in a GIS, from a preexisting paper map (Gray, H.H., 1989, Quaternary Geologic Map of Indiana, Indiana Geological Survey Miscellaneous Map 49).

The following note appears on the published source map (Gray, 1989): This map was prepared using data from many sources, among the most important being earlier geologic work of Frank Leverett, C. A. Malott, W. D. Thornbury, W. J. Wayne, A. F. Schneider, A. M. Gooding, and G. H. Johnson. These were supplemented by field investigations, soils maps, and drilling data. Many of the concepts and interpretations used in the mapping have evolved through discussions with N. K. Bleuer, G. S. Fraser, and J. R. Hill. Geologic assistance by J. J. Johnson, D. P. Brewester, W. E. Nellist, D. A. Heidt, A. W. Bottum, and D. K. Spaulding. Drafted by Roger L. Purcell and assisted by Lori A. Zinn.

Tests for attribute consistency were performed by IGS personnel: Values of each field were checked, using the QueryBuilder Tool in Arcview. (a) Completeness of values were verified. - All attribute values in the shapefile were confirmed to be present on the paper source map. - No values were left blank, unless appropriate. (b) Validity of values was verified. - All values were checked for spelling and capitalization. (c) Relationships between fields symbol and description were created with a database join.

Process_Description:
The Mylar separate that had been used in the publication of Indiana Geological Survey Miscellaneous Map 49 was acquired. The Mylar separate, which is on file with the Technology Transfer Section of the Indiana Geological Survey (IGS), was then scanned by IGS personnel, using a color wide-bed scanner, to a digital raster image. The raster image was vectorized, using ESRI ArcInfo ArcTools (v 8.0.1). The vector data was georeferenced to UTM Zone 16, NAD83. The polygon coverage, named "SURF_GEO500," was then attributed, using the same stratigraphic designations that appear on Indiana Geological Survey Miscellaneous Map 49.

The original coverage, SURF_GEO500, was clipped to another coverage named "INCLP83," a boundary coverage for the State of Indiana (compiled at a scale of 1:24,000). Since SURF_GEO500 and INCLP83 boundaries did not coincide perfectly with one another, some polygons along the state boundary were either slightly truncated or slightly extended to the new boundary. In every case, the modifications were minor. The resulting shapefile was named "SURFICIAL_GEOL_MM49_IN."
