"The National Natural Landmarks Program recognizes and encourages the conservation of outstanding examples of our country's natural history. It is the only natural areas program of national scope that identifies and recognizes the best examples of biological and geological features in both public and private ownership. National Natural Landmarks (NNLs) are designated by the Secretary of the Interior, with the owner's concurrence. To date, fewer than 600 sites have been designated. The National Park Service administers the NNL Program, and if requested, assists NNL owners and managers with the conservation of these important sites."

The Hemmer Woods landmark boundaries were not clear on the map provided by the NPS. Data pertaining to state-managed lands from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) was used to provide further information on the boundaries for Hemmer Wodds. this property is noted for special consideration to be addressed in future review by NPS.
Marengo Cave is another landmark where no clear boundaries were shown on NPS map. Three caves, two in addition to Marengo Cave (Old Town Spring Cavern and Slush Tube Cave), were noted on the map. Polygons were manually drawn to encompass each cave, but all are listed as Marengo Cave with a subunit name if necessary. It is uncertain if the additional two caves are included in the National Natural Landmark program and therefore the true area of the landmark is not correct. This property is also noted for special consideration for future review by the NPS.
The Hemmer Woods landmark boundaries were clear on the map provided by the NPS. Certain assumptions were made to create this polygon. The Hemmer Woods boundary was updated from the previous version of this file.
