Abstract:

LAKE_MICHIGAN_COASTAL_AERIAL_PHOTO_INDEX is a point shapefile intended for use as a layer in geographic information systems software. Each point represents the approximate location of the center of one of more than 1,000 coastal aerial photos collected by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) for the Indiana portion of the Lake Michigan shoreline over a period of more than 20 years, including 1987, 1990, 1993, 1995, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2009, and 2010. A small number of index points in this data set represent photographs of coastline in Cook County, Illinois, and Berrien County, Michigan, where the aircraft turned around.

Purpose:

The layer may be used as a reference to determine the availability and ID numbers of specific Lake Michigan Coastal Aerial Photo images for a given year. A user may acquire scanned images of the photos from the LakeRim Web site (<http://lakerim.indiana.edu>).

Process_Description:

Center for Geospatial Data Analysis (CGDA) personnel used an extension for ArcView 3.x called "Image Catalog" to create an image catalog for each year's set of coastal aerial photos for the following years: 1987, 1990, 1993, 1995, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2006, and 2008. Each set has 74 to 148 images. The resulting image catalogs were converted to polygon shapefiles, which consist of polygon features representing the extent of each individual image. These layers were created using a second extension called "Image Catalog 2 Polygon." The attributes XMIN, XMAX, YMIN, YMAX, and Image_no were automatically created during this process. A new field was then added to the attribute table of each layer named "Image_Ref," and populated it with sequential numbers for each image from west to east across the Lake Michigan coastline. The resulting polygon layers were merged into a single polygon shapefile called Lake_Michigan_Coastal_Photo_Index_poly.shp using the "Merge" tool from ArcToolbox in ArcGIS. The final layer, LAKE_MICHIGAN_COASTAL_PHOTO_INDEX_PT, was created using the "Feature To Point" tool from ArcToolbox in ArcGIS version 9.3.

Center for Geospatial Data Analysis (CGDA) personnel created a raster catalog for 2009 and 2010 images in ArcGIS v10, which includes image footprints (bounding polygons describing the extent of each image). The number of images used in the mosaics for years 2009 and 2010 were 188 and 183, respectively. The footprint polygons were exported to a shapefile using ArcToolbox > Data Management Tools > Features > Copy Features. The resulting image catalogs were converted to polygon shapefiles, which consist of polygon features representing the extent of each individual image. The attributes XMIN, XMAX, YMIN, YMAX, and Image_no were added and calculated using field calculator. The extent geometry values were calculated using Python syntax in the field calculator with the following algorithm (using XMIN as an example): !Shape.extent.XMin!. A new field was then added to the attribute table of each layer named "Image_Ref," and populated it with sequential numbers for each image from west to east across the Lake Michigan coastline. The resulting polygon layers were merged into a single polygon shapefile called Lake_Michigan_Coastal_Photo_Index_poly.shp using the "Merge" tool from ArcToolbox in ArcGIS. The final layer, LAKE_MICHIGAN_COASTAL_PHOTO_INDEX_PT, was created using the "Feature To Point" tool from ArcToolbox in ArcGIS version 10.
