NOTE: The original data set named "NWMHERITAGE_UPDATE_STRIPPED.SHP" was provided to Indiana Geological Survey personnel on August 28, 2008, by Michael Molnar, Program Manager, Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Lake Michigan Coastal Program. An original data layer NWMHERITAGE_UPDATE.SHP from Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Nature Preserves, was modified by Vicky Meretsky (Indiana University) and Forest Clark (United States Fish and Wildlife Service) at the request of Michael Molnar to remove specific plant species names from the attribute table for protective purposes. The data in the original and modified shapefiles is a subset of the Indiana Heritage Database (also called the Indiana Biodiversity Database) that is maintained by the Indiana Natural Heritage Data Center. The database contains information about documented occurrences of federal- and state-listed endangered, threatened, and rare plant and animal species, high quality natural communities, and significant natural areas for Indiana.
A field named NRCODE in the attribute table refers to "natural regions," which are defined in the following publication:
Homoya, M. A., Abrell, D. B., Aldrich, J. R., and Post, T. W., 1985, The Natural Regions of Indiana: Proceedings of the Indiana Academy of Science, v. 94, p. 245-268.
The data are also used for IDNR early coordinations of environmental reviews, U.S. Army Corps of Engineer Public Notices, public lake and floodway permits, coal mining permits, National Forest, lakeshore, and refuge management planning, and information requests from private consultants and individuals who need good up-to-date natural resource data for development planning, research, and so on.
In addition, such data are useful to ecosystem modellers, conservationists, analysts, scientists, and planners concerned with biodiversity assessment and monitoring, taxa inventories, and planning of conservation areas and conservation measures.

The Indiana Natural Heritage Data Center maintains the most comprehensive and up-to-date information about federal- and state-listed endangered, threatened, and rare species, high-quality natural communities, and significant natural areas in Indiana. The Indiana Natural Heritage Data Center prepares more than 2,000 responses annually for heritage data information.

In Indiana, the information in this data layer was used in the development of the draft Coastal and Estuarine Land Conservation Program (CELCP) Plan. The draft plan can be accessed through the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Lake Michigan Coastal Program Web site:

INDIANA DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES DATA CONSTRAINTS: Due to the dynamic nature and sensitivity of the data, the information in the Indiana Heritage Database (also known as the Indiana Biodiversity Database) information should not be used for any project other than that for which it was originally intended. It may be necessary to request updated material to base planning decisions on the most current information. Please see distribution information section for instructions on how to request the most up-to-date information from the Indiana Heritage Data Center. Information provided may not be used by another organization or person for resale. Any person or organization who does offer this information for resale will be barred from receiving any new information.

"Please note that the Indiana Natural Heritage Data Center relies on the observations of many individuals for our data. In most cases, the information is not the result of comprehensive field surveys conducted at particular sites. Therefore, a statement that there are no documented significant natural features at a site should not be interpreted to mean that the site does not support special plants or animals."
"The information is as complete as the reports received. Reports of endangered and threatened species are reviewed by staff ecologists for verification. The information is entered into the database by an assistant data manager. The Information Manager then quality controls entered data for completeness, consistency, and accuracy."
The following fields were retained in HERITAGE_PLANT_SPECIES_IDNR_LAKERIM but renamed, "MANAME" (now, "MGMT_AREA"), "LATNEW," (now, "LAT"), "LONGNEW," (now, "LONG), "WATERSHED" (now, "HUC8").
The field "HUC8" was converted to a string field and the 7-digit codes originally present in the field "WATERSHED" were concatenated with a leading "0" to create the correct 8-digit hydrologic unit code for the watersheds in which the heritage plant species was observed.
The file projection was defined as UTM NAD83 Zone 16.
Attributes and attribute values were researched, and metadata were compiled for the data layer.
The Indiana Natural Heritage Center will respond to information requests pursuant to Indiana's Access to Public Records Act (I.C. 5-14-3 et. seq.). The request must be in writing and include a description of the information being requested and a description and map of the project area. Information requests are subject to a $0.10 per page copying fee. There are no other fees. Cooperative agreements are needed to obtain a complete or large subset of the Indiana Natural Heritage Data Center database.
