Online_Linkage: http://igs.indiana.edu/arcims/statewide/download.html Description: Abstract: Four types of bedrock aquifers in 12 water-management basins identified by the Indiana Natural Resources Commission (INRC) in Indiana were identified by the USGS in U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 92-4142 (Fenelon and others, 1994). The source scale of the maps depicting aquifers was 1:500,000. Aquifer maps are based on information from hydrogeologic sections and from previous studies. Attributes were compiled from tabular information contained in Fenelon and others (1994). Information contained in the report was used to identify mapped rock units within aquifer systems and distribute the aquifer characteristics to those polygons. Purpose: These data are intended for use at a scale of 1:500,000 or smaller. Owing to the small scale and sparseness of data used for the aquifer-systems mapping, the primary intended use is for regional data display and analysis rather than specific local or site-specific data analysis. Supplemental_Information: The following is excerpted from Fenelon and others (1994, page 1): "Wells completed in the bedrock aquifers generally have lower yields than wells in most of the sand and gravel aquifers, but the bedrock aquifers are areally widespread and a major source of water for many domestic users and some large users of ground water. Carbonate rocks (limestone and dolostone); sandstones; complexly interbedded sandstone, siltstone, shale, limestone, and coal; and an upper weathered zone in low permeability rocks comprise the types of bedrock aquifers. Aquifers in carbonate rocks of Silurian, Devonian, and Mississippian age underlie about one-half of Indiana and are the most important of the bedrock aquifers in terms of yield and areal extent. The other principal type of bedrock aquifer is sandstone, which underlies large areas in the southwestern one-fifth of Indiana. The mapped sandstones are located within deposits of complexly interbedded sandstone, siltstone, shale, limestone, and coal of Mississippian and Pennsylvanian age. These complex deposits yield small quantities of water of variable quality, but they are important if they are the only available aquifer in a particular area. The remaining bedrock aquifer, which is used when it is the sole source of water for an area, is an upper weathered zone developed primarily in siltstone and shale of Mississippian and Devonian age and, to a lesser extent, in some of the shale and limestone of Ordovician age. No aquifer is mapped in the southeastern corner of Indiana, which is underlain by shale and limestone of Ordovician age." A LYR (Aquifers_bedrock_USGS_IN.lyr) file accompanies this data layer to assist the user with symbolization so that the vertical sequence of aquifer systems can be visualized in geographic information system (GIS) software, particularly ESRI software products. The accuracy of these attributes is not known. The accuracy of the reported aquifer characteristics is not intended to represent site-specific conditions, but to identify types of aquifers and typical extents of rock units likely to contain and produce ground water. The thickness ranges and potential aquifer yield ranges are estimates of regional aquifer characteristics. Logical_Consistency_Report: Checks for sliver polygons were conducted and resolved by attributing the slivers with the "Aquifer_Type" value of the adjacent polygon in the same "Basin" and dissolving the boundaries. No topological checks were conducted on this data set. The shapefile represents a vertical distribution of aquifers, and the polygon boundaries overlap. In places with overlapping aquifer system polygons, more than one potential aquifer exists. Completeness_Report: Layer includes data of unconsolidated aquifers including aquifer type, local names, thickness, and potential aquifer yield as presented in the USGS publication Hydrogeologic Atlas of Aquifers of Indiana (Fenelon and others, 1994). Where a type of aquifer was less than 15 square miles in areal extent, it was not mapped because of scale limitations. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: The source publication (Fenelon, 1994) reports no information on horizontal accuracy of the original 1:500,000-scale mapping. Horizontal accuracy is largely contingent upon accuracy of the source publication. ESRI ArcGIS was used to georeference vector data using Indiana county boundaries. Vertical_Positional_Accuracy: Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Vertical accuracy was not a factor in the digital production of the data set. IGS personnel exported the data from Adobe Illustrator as PNG files at 900 dpi with a transparent background. The PNG files were geoferenced in ESRI ArcMap to LANDSURVEY_COUNTY_POLY_IN.shp and the mapped aquifer boundaries were digitized using the "Trace" function of the ArcMap Editor Toolbar. The stratigraphic column for Paleozoic rocks in Indiana was used to identify the relationships of the aquifers and the overlying units. The thickness of the overlying unit was taken into consideration to assess the plausibility of accessing the underlying aquifer by drilling through the overlying aquitard. The individual aquifer system polygons per basin were dissolved in ArcMap using the ID field. Unique ID values were also assigned to the aquifer system/basin combinations without detailed ROCK_UNIT polygons.
